Dyslexia 'could be due to problems with noise'

A proneness to becoming distracted and an inability to filter out irrelevant information could be one of the root causes of dyslexia, according to a new study.

The investigation by a group of university researchers suggested that children who cannot properly distinguish data that can be ignored from important information could have problems identifying letters and word sounds.

Anne Sperling of the National Institute of Mental Health in the US and co-author of the study said that deep-lying problems, which affect all areas of perception, could be at the root of dyslexia.

"It's harder to make a [language] task automatic when your categories are fuzzier than they ought to be to begin with," Ms Sperling added.

"In terms of treatment, the results suggest that programs that foster the development of sharper perceptual categories for letters and letter sounds might be a good way to supplement existing dyslexia interventions." Read full article here

GADA Who Are We, What We Do & What Are Our Aims

Galway Dyslexia association is a non-profit making charity which helps children with dyslexia.  Children with dyslexia find it difficult to learn to become literate but are usually fully capable of becoming fully employable members of society with the correct help. If not given help these children may end up disillusioned very intelligent people but without qualifications, which in turn leads to problems for them and society. Schools now help some of these children but cannot help all at present.

In 12 years in Galway Dyslexia Association has grown from seven students to around a hundred. Students can continue until leaving cert, many do very well and enter third level.

In Galway we provide specialist teaching for dyslexic children, courses for parents and teachers and dyslexia screening tests.

bullet

We provide a voluntary telephone query answer service.

Dyslexia is something, which prevents many children from reading and learning in the normal way. It can be inherited and so it’s common for several children in one family to have to cope with this condition. Children with dyslexia who are given the correct support will overcome their reading difficulties. Many of the children we have helped have gone on to complete degrees and college courses; they are fully employed and contributing to our society.

We recognise that schools do not have the necessary resources they need to meet the needs of our dyslexic children. Our mission is to fight for help within the schooling system for these children. We also employ specially trained teachers to help with these children outside of school hours by teaching them in small groups. Click here to found out more.
